China’s Merchant Class

Southeast AsiaSoutheast Asia is home to more than half a billion people, but the region’s economy is dominated by some 40 families, most of Chinese descent.

In New Asian Emperors, authors George Haley, Usha Haley, and Chin Tiong Tan highlight the business models and management practices of these family-run conglomerates, drawing lessons for Western multinationals.

The Surprising Strength of Southeast Asia

aseanDespite continuing concerns about corruption, red tape, and political instability, it’s suffering far less from the financial crisis than other parts of the world. Some companies operating in the region continue to do well, as demand for everything from computers to discount airline tickets remains strong.

Southeast Asia’s strength is an encouraging sign that the region is still a player. Though it may have been half-forgotten by many investors since the crisis, its educated workers, natural resources, and—in some countries, at least—first-class infrastructure make it worth paying attention to. ASEAN has a total population of 560 million, and its combined gross domestic product of $1.3 trillion is greater than India’s.

Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore—which account for about 95% of the region’s economy—attracted nearly $50 billion in foreign direct investment last year, vs. China’s $92 billion [source].

“Locked” @ the Library and the Office!

Locked in Library

Hello! Please don’t expect too many new blog entries in the upcoming week, school work is piling up! Yah, I love it!

For my Chinese economy class we have to prepare a lecture and therefore write a 30 page paper before Monday and the week after that give the actual lecture. Our chosen topic is on East Asian (ASEAN+3) integration into the world economy. Quite an interesting topic and I like it very much. In addition, for Korean economy class I have to give another presentation next week and this Saturday we’re also starting with our final term paper for Strategic Management and Global Competition. I’m happy that the scheduling with the different teams for different classes worked out quite well. Usually things can be quite troublesome when you try to plan meetings with different teams for different classes.

From the bright side I’ve also allocated time to play! So yesterday evening I went to an ice skate rink, however recreational ice-skating was only during daytime so we treated ourselves with a nice meal instead. Friday and Saturday evening are already booked, will hang out with friends!

BTW: Thanks for your emails I will try to reply them ASAP but most likely next week. Anyway out for now! I can better go back to my studies!
